Senator Joe Hardy was elected to the NV Senate (Clark District 12) in November 2010 and is serving his first Senate term. He is the current Senate Minority Whip. Before joining the Senate he served in the NV Assembly from 2003 to 2009.
Joe was born in 1949 in Reno, Nevada. He graduated from Sparks High School (Student Body President); University of Nevada, Reno, School of Medicine (B.S.); and Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, School of Medicine (M.D.) Joe also joined the military and achieved the rank of Major in the United States Air Force.
A board-certified family physician practicing in Henderson, Nevada, Joe was named Nevada Family Physician of the Year for 1998 and 2010. He is affiliated with the Nevada Academy of Family Physicians; American Academy of Family Physicians; Clark County Medical Society; American Medical Association; Southern Nevada Health District; and the Coalition for Improving and Expanding Nevada Health Care. He served as Chief of Staff, Boulder City Hospital; Chief of Internal Medicine and Family Practice, St. Rose Dominican Hospital, Henderson; and President, Nevada Academy of Family Practice. He also served on the Regents Ad Hoc Committee for Higher Education/Health (2003-2004); Task Force for the Fund for a Healthy Nevada (2003-2004); Boulder City Drug Abuse Council; Clark County Health District Board of Directors; and St. Rose Dominican Hospital Board of Directors.
In addition to his Healthcare contributions/achievements, Joe was a Boulder City Councilman and Mayor pro Tempore; Vice President, Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition; and member of Boulder City Community Education Advisory Board (Executive Committee); Nevada League of Cities Legislative Committee; Board of Directors, LDS Family Services (Adoption Agency); and Debt Management Commission, Clark County. While in South Dakota, he was on the Rapid Valley Water District Board of Directors and was Vice President, Parent Teacher Association, Rapid Valley Elementary School.
Joe has been active in the community through the American Legion, Post 31; the Chamber of Commerce; Boy Scouts of America; and through teaching Sunday School. He served his LDS mission in France (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) and was the Publicity Chairman for Walk for Development, Ayuda, and Meals on Wheels in 1968. He also took part in the One World Ambassador Alliance, Humanitarian Project–El Salvador.
Joe is married to Jill Sweningsen Hardy. They have 8 children (Joseph Paul Jr., Nicole, Emily, Leah, Spencer, Dane, Jack, Ryan) and 16 grandchildren.
